Tomorrow is the first day of my second year of medical school. This new beginning raising a few anxious feelings. thinking about the stresses, thinking about responsibilities, thinking about other goals. What I decided to do was to have a look back at some of the things that have occurred so far this summer to calm me down.
- Went to my first concert - Colbie Callait...and I knew all the words
- signed up to run the NYCmarathon - A feat not for the faint of heart
- Conquered Hadley Mountain - had no idea hiking could be that much fun
- Had my craziest Bday week ever - Sushi&saki/cookie/ciroc/goose/a'mangieres...........
- Went camping for the first time - Watching Baer Grylls definitely paid off
- future health care leaders program -up there as one of my best jobs all time so far
- Got a magazine article - only in touch magazine but gotta crawl before you walk. (GQ I'm coming)
The list goes on and on. I'm smiling.
Keeping up with my blog and training for the NYC Marathon will definitely be difficult but I am excited to take on the challenge.
To update on enrichments - The past week I managed to average about five articles from the times in the day but I will reduce it to three per day. Unfortunately I did not do any drawings like I was supposed to last week but I have decided to have a re-do and I will post & pieces once completed.

Fairly Modest
It is said that humility, and modesty are extremely important virtues. For the longest I have accepted this paradigm of individual character but my views on it have begin to change. There is no doubt, YES be humble and modest always BUT to everyone but yourself.
If I had to vouch for myself I would say that I am a pretty modest person, decently humble but only people who know me would be able to verify. The thing with being so modest with myself was that for the longest I was unable to enjoy, reminisce, have pride in my accomplishments. I also was unable to talk about myself ( Trying to write my medical school personal statement was a task from hell).
When youre not modest to others it is most certainly bragging, but can you really brag to yourself? ( you are the only person that you cannot deceive). Only you know how much work you have put in, how tough the grind was and how good it really felt and feels. Being modest to yourself prevents acknowledments of personal accomplishments and not realizing how much an individual has grown.
After reading this post think about your accomplishments since the start of this year (no matter how big or small), bet it brings a smile to your face.

Its a Rap
Exciting, entertaining, gripping, artistic, creative, poignant, skillful(sometimes) but WRONG MESSAGE.
Most kids this generation do not need parents permission to buy cds, they can download music online, on phones, watch on youtube etc. It is no doubt that there is no filter to what type of music they listen to. Rap music of course is listened to by many different people but mostly young minority individuals.
That said, it is safe to say that there is a problem with the message being broad casted by this Genre of music. I enjoy rap music no doubt! blasting it in my car, rapping along, figuring out the playon words. All these are fun but, I know better, These guys are not spending, flying, eating, sleeping as much as they say (maybe Jay-Z). And they are not killing, beating up, carrying as many guns (except T.I) as they claim. I know better, but does the teenager growing up in inner city streets? NO! but then what else should they listen to? or whats a better alternative? hopefully this is not another one of those endless cycles in society that is hard to break.
So I feel there is a conflict, cos I like the music but damn, am I setting a bad example every time I listen to it? Definitely have to ponder this over the next few days
P.S RnB/hip hop is no better, they have definitely helped fuel this sex crazed generation.

Broketivity
When you are so broke that you have no option than to partake in abnormal activities - Broketivity. Its the highest or lowest level of being broke whichever way suits you to look at it. It is safe to say I haven't been this broke in a while. It gives me a chance to reminisce on my many times of broketivity.
1. When I ate one 89cent burrito as my three course meal for an entire week. You can say all you want about fast food, but you CANNOT eat healthy when you're broke.
2. Got gas with coins from my car. Think it was a dollar and 74 or 75 cents, you should've seen the look on the cashiers face.
3.two sweatpants three hoodies and two blanket formation to combat the Albany winter because we couldn't afford heat. good times.
4. playing soccer with half an orange or a rock, some of the best times i had playing in my life.
5. Wear the 4 for 5 dollar XXXL white tees .... need i say more? hahahahaha
I think its beneficial that we all experience moments when we are down in our life repeatedly because it keeps us grounded (pun intended). I think knowing how it is to be at the bottom or close t it should be experienced by anyone who will ever have a position of power. This allows for empathy, rational, sensible and being considerate.

To Compare
The tendency to compare is something that all individuals adapt into their lives. Its how we picked our favorite toys as kids, to clothes as adults (we all know our parents picked our childhood outfits that now look hideous), to the foods we eat., it affects people we choose to hang out with, our career paths and many more things. Comparing becomes important because it raises the question of value. When we compare we are in simpler terms searching for things that we value. Something that has greater value ( bang for your buck) will be selected. (The idea of value and worth will be addressed in a later post)
These are some of the "good" aspects of comparing that w use in our daily lives but there is one that I think should be avoided as much as possible : Comparing yourself to other people. Some call it a way of motivation, some away to feel better about themselves, I call it ineffective. Ineffective for the simple fact that it takes away from true focus and figuring out who we really are. It takes away from individuality because you can spend time figuring out what drives other people and not realize what drives you and your personal interests.
Next time the thought of comparing yourself to others creeps into your mind just let it go, in the words of a wise woman when talking about the same topic, "It is a sign of weakness". You are a completely different entity, at least that 2 percent or so of your DNA that really matters :)
PS: this weeks tasks have been difficult in the sense that I am stuck contemplating what I want to draw more than I've actually been doing any drawing. SO I would like to take requests or at least a comment from reader(s). Its been over ten posts and still no comments.

Weekly enrichment update 1
For the past week I planned reading ten articles a day from the NYtimes from at least five different sections. The two toughest days ethe first and the last, It was definitely a challenge but I made it through. I have decided that Its worth applying this to my daily life, except ten is way too hectic. I will reduce it to five a day, a more realistic figure.
The News is definitely depressing to read continuously though, very little in the way of good news especially in the realm of politics. The republican vs democrat vs obama saga. The science and health care sections were definitely more uplifting because you I learned about the various health awareness techniques being used to target individuals with the many preventable diseases that plague us like AIDS and Obesity.
For this next week, I will go back to my artistic days. I have always been an artist at heart and this week I will have a drawing/ portrait every day. I will post pictures of my artwork to make sure I complete the task... for now i'm off to loose some points from my I.Q score by watching jersey shore hopefully I gain some back from reading Stephen hawkins book afterwards.

nycmarathon 1
I think purpose is vital in everything we do. The scientists who research constantly to make our future a better place, The teachers who teach children to become better, The parents who constantly attempt to raise their children the right way. I think that with purpose come drive and I have found my purpose for the NYC marathon. Fundraising for shoe4Africa, raising money to help fight AIDs, increase women empowerment and many more amazing ordeals. This purpose is hopefully what will help me complete the marathon. Till now, the most I have run in a day is probably about ten miles, the marathon is two and half times that, so my drive through purpose will be very essential especially with the combination of adequate training. Today will be my first day of training for the marathon and I am extremely hype! I will be running for with a purpose. I hope that through this training process I get to learn a great deal about myself and more about shoe4Africa.
Todays I will run 4 miles so lets get it!!!!

Big picture/Little picture
In this our world, so vast in land, resources, people and most importantly variations. I can't help but to wonder if there is a BIG PICTURE. Like the physicists who search for a formula that governs the laws of the universe, I think of different ways that events and people can intertwine. Can you have a big picture at all for the world or is it a bunch of little pictures. And If it is a multitude of little pictures do they all come together like a puzzle or a mural to make a big picture or can they never be combined.
How can there be so many differences between cultures, lifestyles, communities and individuals. Do these variations have an overlying purpose other than chaos? and can it bring some type of order? What if everyone in the world was the same, of equal status, drive, wealth and happiness. NO I am NOT talking about communism. I'm talking, everyone is equal from birth to death, would the wars, pollutions, disagreements and suffering persist? But for some reason it is not this way, The first humans were not made so different as we all are today.
In a disorganized big picture where the final puzzle is either of chaos or incomplete is the only way that I can envision an individual perfectly happy and successful amidst anothers suffering. It seems that we live in a world that to survive as individuals we dissociate from the idea of an ideal big picture by turning the little picture which is an individual or few people to our big puzzle.
Whatever you do, remember that there is always more to life than yourself. :)
